Privacy
Your messages stay on your Mac.
NotchX is a small app that runs entirely on your Mac. It has no account, no analytics and no tracking, and it keeps no history of what you read. This page lists everything it looks at, and the few times it goes online.

What NotchX reads on your Mac
All of this is read and shown on your Mac only. None of it is saved to disk or sent anywhere.
- Notification banners (with the Accessibility permission). NotchX reads the banners macOS is already showing you — the app, the sender and the text — to show them in the notch. It keeps the last few in memory while it runs, and forgets them when you quit. It never opens your Messages, Slack or mail data.
- Call windows (Accessibility). During a call, NotchX reads the call app's own buttons — mute, camera, Decline, Join — so the notch matches them and can press them for you.
- Which app is using the microphone or speaker. To notice a call that has no banner, NotchX asks macOS which apps are using audio. It never records or listens to any audio.
- Calendar (with your permission). NotchX looks at events in the next few hours to show your next meeting and its join link.
- Now Playing. The title, artist, album art and progress of the song playing in Apple Music or Spotify.
- Volume, brightness, battery state and Bluetooth audio devices, to show the volume bar and when your AirPods connect.
- Location (with your permission, only when Weather is on). Used to look up the weather — see below.
What goes online, and why
- Your licence — Lemon Squeezy. When you activate, NotchX sends your licence key and your Mac's name (so you can tell your Macs apart) to Lemon Squeezy, which sells NotchX. It re-checks the key about once a week. Nothing else is sent. If you're offline, your licence keeps working.
- Updates — downloads.byquan.app. NotchX downloads a small update list from our server (hosted on Cloudflare). Like any download, the server sees your IP address and the app version. NotchX doesn't send a system profile.
- Weather — Open-Meteo and Apple (only when you turn Weather on; it's off at first). NotchX sends your approximate position, rounded to about 1 km, to Open-Meteo about every 15 minutes, and asks Apple's geocoding service for your city's name. No other information goes with it.
- Join and Buy links. When you click Join or Buy, the link opens in your browser. NotchX only opens meeting links from known services (Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, FaceTime, Webex, Whereby, Jitsi).
What NotchX stores
- Your settings (which features are on, your music look, message detail) in the app's preferences on your Mac.
- Your licence key, its activation and the trial start date in your Mac's Keychain.
- Diagnostic messages in the macOS system log are kept to a minimum; message text and senders are marked private there, so macOS hides them.
To remove everything, quit NotchX, drag it to the Trash, and in Keychain Access delete the items named app.byquan.notch.license. If you'd like to free your licence for another Mac first, choose ⓘ › Deactivate this Mac.
Permissions
NotchX asks for each permission only when a feature needs it, and works without the ones you decline:
- Accessibility — to read notification banners and call buttons, and to replace the volume and brightness pop-ups. Without it, music, AirPods and weather still work.
- Calendar — for upcoming meetings.
- Location — only for the weather.
- Automation — to control Apple Music and Spotify.
You can change any of them in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
